What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and why should I train it?

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art built on technique, leverage, and strategy rather than size or strength. It’s one of the most effective self-defense systems in the world — and it doubles as an incredible way to build fitness, relieve stress, and sharpen your mind.

Do I need experience or fitness to start?

Not at all. Most of our members started with zero background. BJJ meets you where you are — whether you’re looking to get in shape, challenge yourself, or just try something new.

Do you offer free trials?

Yes — a 2-week free trial for adults and kids. No pressure, no cost, just a chance to see if it feels right for you.

How much does it cost, and do I need a contract?

Kids’ memberships are 5/month and adults 5/month. No 1-year contracts, no lock-ins — our memberships are month-to-month because we want you here by choice, not obligation.

Can kids train Jiu Jitsu?

Absolutely. Our kids’ programs start at age 3 and are designed to build confidence, discipline, and problem-solving skills — all while having fun.

What’s the difference between gi and no-gi training?

Gi classes use the traditional kimono; no-gi is with rash guards and shorts. Both teach Jiu Jitsu — gi emphasizes grips and control, no-gi emphasizes speed and wrestling-style movement. We offer both.

What facilities and amenities do you offer?

We have showers, complimentary towels, a pro shop with merch, and a water cooler. Everything you need to train hard and get on with your day.

Do you welcome visitors and drop-ins?

Yes, we love having visitors. No mat fee for single drop-ins — just sign the waiver. If you want to support us, grab some merch.

Who are the coaches and what’s your lineage?

Our head coaches, Jeff and Steve, are black belts under Nic Gregoriades — the very first person to receive a black belt from Roger Gracie. That connection makes our lineage legit. Alongside them, we have a dedicated coaching team with complementary skills. We meet regularly to refine our approach and ensure our Jiu Jitsu instruction is always best in class.

What makes Academia BJJ different?

We’re not a gym built only for hardcore competitors. Academia is a long-term home for anyone who wants to grow — as a practitioner, and as a person.

Our focus is on longevity: Jiu Jitsu as a lifelong practice, not just a phase. Whether your goal is weight loss, stress relief, fitness, mental sharpness, or building confidence, we help you grow at your own pace.

Unlike corporate gyms or elitist academies, our culture is raw, real, and welcoming. On our mats, beginners train alongside seasoned competitors, parents alongside kids, all pushing and supporting each other. Titles and status fall away — what’s left is effort, honesty, and growth.

At Academia, you’ll find world-class technique, a dedicated coaching team, and a community that makes Jiu Jitsu part of your life, not something that takes it over.

What should I bring to my first class?

Comfortable athletic clothing — ideally without zippers or pockets. A T-shirt and shorts or leggings work fine if you don’t have a gi yet. Bring a bottle of water, flip-flops for walking off the mats, and an open mind. We’ll handle the rest.

Do I need to be fit before starting?

Not at all. Jiu Jitsu gets you fit. Everyone starts somewhere, and we build at your pace. You’ll quickly gain strength, flexibility, and confidence just by showing up consistently.
